In a unanimous vote at its Oct. 18 meeting, the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors approved an agreement that provides $1 million in funding to help homeowners in the Town of Guadalupe with home repairs. With an average repair cost estimated at $20,000 per home, the funding is expected to assist at least 50 homeowners between now and March 2025.
"This collaboration exemplifies the dedication of Maricopa County to the entire spectrum of housing needs across our county,” stated Board of Supervisors Chairman Clint Hickman of District 4. “By working together with the Town of Guadalupe, we are making a lasting impact on the lives of all residents, including creating healthier and safer living environments for homeowners."
This collaborative effort will fund repairs that could include roofing, plumbing, electrical, septic/sewer, HVAC, appliances, doors, and windows, adding ADA accommodations, resolving moisture issues, as well as addressing security, pests, hoarding, safety and sanitation issues. This project is an ongoing effort to improve housing conditions and maintain affordable housing for residents within the Town of Guadalupe.
Supervisor Steve Gallardo of District 5 expressed his enthusiasm for the initiative, stating, "We can’t simply build our way out of the affordable housing crisis. We also have to find innovative ways to keep people in the homes they have, and that’s exactly what this partnership with the Town of Guadalupe does. We’re giving homeowners who may be tight on cash some assistance to complete critical repairs that will keep their home safe and secure.”
The funding comes from Maricopa County’s allocation of federal American Rescue Plan Act dollars. The Town of Guadalupe will also contribute $200,000 to the program, bringing the total project budget to $1.2 million.
Homeowners must meet eligibility requirements that include:
- Occupying the home as their primary residence
- Being current on mortgage, real estate taxes, and homeowner's insurance payments
- Having a household income at or below 80% of the Area Median Income (AMI)
- Agreeing to a five-year period in which the grant would need to be repaid if the home is sold or transferred.
This investment is part of a series of solutions that Maricopa County has funded along the housing continuum to ensure that people in housing remain secure and that those without housing are provided with opportunities to secure housing.
