Floodplain Management Plan 2020 Update

Maricopa County participates in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) and its additional Community Rating System (CRS) Program.  As a requirement of the CRS Program, the District developed and periodically updates its Floodplain Management Plan (FMP).  The FMP communicates an overall strategy of programs, projects and measures that when implemented should reduce the adverse impact of flooding in the community.  The FMP also identifies flood hazards in the community and is used by the District as we address flooding issues in unincorporated Maricopa County.

As a Repetitive Loss Community and holding a Class 4 in the NFIP CRS Program, the County is required to have a Floodplain Management Plan.  The Class 4 rating allows residents in the unincorporated county to receive up to a 30 percent discount on flood insurance.  Under the CRS, the flood insurance premiums of a community’s residents and businesses are discounted to reflect that community’s work to reduce flood damage.

Per the requirements of the CRS program, the County must prepare an FMP every five years.  The District last updated the County’s Plan in November 2015.  The 2015 Floodplain Management Plan can be found in the On-Line Library on the Flood Control District’s website.  As part of the 2020 update, a Floodplain Management Plan Committee (Committee) has been established made up of representatives of Maricopa County, the State of Arizona, various federal agencies, municipalities, organizations and the general public.  The Committee will help identify and prioritize flood hazards and potential solutions.
