Long Range Planning

Long Range Plans are created for land use, land planning and development policies.

Area Land Use Plans

Maricopa County has a number of area land use plans that work in concert with the Comprehensive Plan. These area plans are more specific to the local areas they cover in relation to community characteristics, topography, special conditions, etc.

  1. New River
  2. Rainbow Valley
  3. Rio Verde Foothills

Statement from Supervisor Gates

Dear New River and Desert Hill Community Members,

During the past year, and even prior to taking office, the community has shared the need to update the 1999 New River Area Plan.

After speaking with so many of you over the past year and hearing a variety of ideas and concerns regarding elements of the current New River Area Plan, I agree with you and we now begin the process of reviewing the plan in its entirety with numerous opportunities for community input before supporting any amendments or an entirely new plan.

As we move forward with updating the Area Plan, know that the process takes time and nothing will be recommended or decided without ample involvement from the community. Also know that this process usually does not create unanimous agreement, and will require compromise and civil discourse throughout the discussion.

Many of you have worked diligently over the years to provide comments and suggestions. Thank you for your efforts and those will be incorporated in the discussions as we move forward. I look forward to working with the community on this effort.

Thank you,

Supervisor Bill Gates

Additional Long Range Planning

  1. Comprehensive Plan
  2. Scenic Corridors

Maricopa County is required by state law to prepare a comprehensive plan for its area of jurisdiction. The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors approved the latest comprehensive plan, Vision 2030 (PDF), in January, 2016. This plan covers a variety of topics that are important to this region's future, including land use, transportation, environment, economic growth, areas of future growth, open space, water resources, energy, and fiscal impacts. The plan includes strategies and policies to help address these important issues and ensure a strong and vibrant region for years to come.
