UPDATE FOR ALL SHELTER VISITORS: Effective Wednesday, August 4 - Masks will be required for all employees and visitors, regardless of vaccination status, inside all county buildings. This aligns with the CDC and ADHS guidance which recommends mask use for all people in public indoor settings in areas of substantial and high transmission of COVID-19 and the Delta variant.

Distemper Update: September 22, 2021

Please read carefully: we have confirmed cases of canine distemper within our shelter, and as a result, we are making some adjustments to our operations. Dog-to-dog introductions have been canceled until further notice. At our West Shelter, the kennel buildings with affected dogs will be closed to the public and quarantined from the rest of our facility until testing is completed and all dogs are cleared. At this time, half of building D and all of G are quarantined.

If you would like to adopt a dog that is staying in one of the affected buildings, it will still be possible to "blind adopt" the dog with certain restrictions. If determined, we will PCR test the dog, and it will need to be strictly isolated at home away from all other animals for a minimum of 7 days, until the test results are back. If the dog is not spayed/neutered already, it will need to stay at the shelter until it can be evaluated to determine a surgery date. We understand that this may be an inconvenience, but these precautions are necessary to prevent possible spread of the disease, ensure the safety of our shelter pets, and save as many lives as possible.

Here's how the adoption process works:

*Please note: We have a limited number of pets (dogs only) at our East Shelter. You can search what pets are available by visiting the adoptable pets website and use the top right search function by typing in "East". See example below.

  • Complete the adoption paperwork.
  • Go home with your new best friend!

Make the most of your appointment - follow these steps in advance:

  1. Check out our available pets online. Our population changes every few minutes, so for best results, check the website an hour before your appointment to view current animal availability.
  2. Write down the A# for the animal(s) you want to meet. To maximize our life saving efforts and ensure animals spend as little time as possible at the shelter, we cannot hold any pets for your appointment time. Please review all requirements and recommendations on the pets you have selected. For instance, some dogs require that the entire family be present for a meet and greet, or no small pets in the home.
    - If the dog you selected requires a dog-to-dog intro, and you already have a dog at home, you can bring your dog with you to the adoption appointment. Please note, this may require a longer wait time.
  3. Review our additional adoption information and options below. There are several ways to bring a shelter pet into your family and these resources will help you to find your perfect fit.
