Installation / Upgrading

Installation Procedures

  1. Backing Up Old DDMSW Projects (versions 2.1.0 and 3.3.2)
    1. If you do not have DDMSW 3.3.2 or DDMSW 2.1.0 on your computer or do not need the previous projects developed under DDMSW 3.3.2 or DDMSW 2.1.0, you can directly go to Step 2. If you have DDMSW 3.3.2 or DDMSW 2.1.0 and you need to preserve those projects, please proceed as follows.
    2. For DDMSW 3.3.2 backup, launch DDMSW 3.3.2 and then go to:
      1. File
      2. Project Management
      3. Backup Project
      4. Select a Project
      5. Click on "Backup" Button
    3. For DDMSW 2.1.0 backup, launch DDMSW 2.1.0, and then go to
      1. File
      2. Management
      3. Check Backup Project in Action Frame
      4. Select the Project You Are to Back Up in the Project Frame
      5. Click on the "Backup" Button
    4. Repeat Step 1.2 to back up all old DDMSW projects. The backup projects will be saved in zip format to the "backup" sub folder under DDMSW 3.3.2 or DDMSW 2.1.0 installation folder.
    5. Copy the backup projects in zip format to a folder outside the DDMSW 3.3.2 or DDMSW 2.1.0 installation folders (note: later after you install DDMSW 3.5.2, you will need to import all zip files into DDMSW 3.5.2). We always recommend saving the backup projects on a different computer for storage purposes.
  2. Installing DDMSW 3.5.2
    1. If you already have DDMSW 2.1.0 or lower version installed on your computer, a full installation of DDMSW 3.5.2 is required. If you already have DDMSW 3.3.2 installed on your computer, you have the options of either installing full version DDMSW 3.5.2, or upgrading DDMSW 3.3.2 to DDMSW 3.5.2 by running the upgrade patch. See "Upgrading DDMSW 3.3.2 to DDMSW3.5.2" at the bottom of this page for details on how to do an upgrade. We recommend the full installation of DDMSW 3.5.2. You can have all versions of DDMSW installed on one computer if you want to compare the results by different versions.
    2. Right-click on the Installation File (ZIP) and choose "Save Target As" to download the self-extracting file FCDMCINSTALL352.EXE to a new folder (for example, c:\ddms352download) on your computer.
    3. Double-click on FCDMCINSTALL352.EXE to self-extract files in the new folder (for example, c:\ddmsw352download). Due to the size of this self-extract file, it might take a few minutes to extract all the files in the package depending on the processing speed of the end user's computer. Don't terminate the self-extraction process prematurely. A message box will pop up when all the files are successfully extracted. Proceed to the next step only after all the required files are extracted.
    4. Locate and double-click Setup.exe in the new folder (for example, c:\ddmsw352download) to install DDMSW 3.5.2. A warning message will be displayed to allow you to change a folder instead of using the default installation folder.
    5. Click on "Change..." button to create a new installation folder for the DDMSW 3.5.2. Under "Folder name:" text box, you can type a new installation folder name, for example, C:\DDMSW352.
      1. If the default installation folder (C:\FCDMC\ST) is selected during the full version installation, all the old data, including the users' data, in DDMSW 3.3.2 will be overwritten by DDMSW 3.5.2's example data if DDMSW 3.3.2 is also installed under this default installation folder (C:\FCDMC\ST). We strongly recommend not using this default installation folder. Instead, we recommend creating a new installation folder like C:\DDMSW352.
      2. We STRONGLY RECOMMEND the users, in any case, using the non-default installation folder, backing up their data in DDMSW 3.3.2, saving them in a different folder or even on a different computer before conducting the DDMSW 3.5.2 installation, and then importing the backed-up data into DDMSW 3.5.2 if needed.
      3. After the installation folder is selected or created, follow the installation process to finish the installation. The installation package will guide you through the rest of the steps.
  3. Launching DDMSW 3.5.2
    1. After DDMSW 3.5.2 is installed, launch DDMSW 3.5.2 by clicking on the shortcut in Start Menu
      1. Start Menu
      2. Programs
      3. FCDMC
      4. ST
      5. DDMSW3
      6. Or directly click on DDMSW shortcut (DDMSW3) on desktop.
    2. If you already have DDMSW 3.3.2 on your computer before the installation of DDMSW 3.5.2, the shortcut in Start Menu or on the desktop is replaced with DDMSW 3.5.2 shortcut. If you want to use DDMSW 3.3.2, you must manually create a shortcut for DDMSW 3.3.2. To create a shortcut for DDMSW 3.3.2, go to the installation folder for DDMSW 3.3.2 (for example it may be C:\FCDMC\ST or C:\DDMSW332) and find stl.exe file. Right-click on stl.exe and select "Create Shortcut." A shortcut called "Shortcut to stl.exe" will be created in the same folder. Right-click on "Shortcut to stl.exe" and select "Properties" to open a new window. At the "Start in:" text box, it should show the installation folder for DDMSW 3.3.2. For example, if your DDMSW 3.3.2 installation folder is C:\FCDMC\ST, the text box should show "C:\FCDMC\ST." To make the shortcut work, append "\Data" to the installation folder in the text box of "Start in:." Here, it is "C:\FCDMC\ST\Data" for this example. Now this shortcut can be used to launch DDMSW 3.3.2. This shortcut can be copied to the desktop to be used later. This procedure is also documented in the DDMSW manual.
  4. Initializing DDMSW 3.5.2
    1. After launching DDMSW 3.5.2 in the above step, click on the "OK" button on "Agreement" window if you agree with the disclaimer, then click on the "OK" button on the "Select Project" window. On the menu bar click on Tools and select Options to open the "Setup Options" window.
      1. Click on the "Browse" button on the right hand side of the "Help Reader" text box to locate Acrobat Reader, AcroRd32.exe on your computer (the actual location of the executable file may vary depending on which version of Acrobat product is installed on the computer. Normally it is located at C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat xx.\Reader\, where xx. is the version number). Click on AcroRd32.exe and select the "OK" button. This step will set up the path to Acrobat PDF Reader (all help files are in PDF format). Click on "OK" and "Save" buttons.
      2. Upon the installation, "Programmer's File Editor" (pfe32.exe) is automatically set to be the default word processing editor. You can change it to your preferred word editor by clicking on the browse button on the right-hand side of the "Editor" text box to locate the executable file of your preferred word editor, like notepad.exe, wordpad.exe, or winword.exe. Click on "OK" and "Save" buttons.
      3. Click on the "Browse" button on the right-hand side of the "ArcGIS" text box to locate the ArcGIS executable file on your computer (Normally it is located at C:\Program Files\ArcGIS\Bin\) => Click on ArcMap.exe and then click on the "OK" button. This step will set up the ArcMap as your preferred software to open all the shape files used in DDMSW 3.5.2. Click on "OK" and "Save" buttons.
    2. Model Runs Path Set Up. This step will set up the path to model runs (where the hec-1 models will be run).
      1. If you have already created a project, then go to:
        1. File
        2. Select Project to Open the "Select Project" Window
        3. Highlight the Project You Are to Set Up
        4. Click on "OK" to Close the "Select Project" Window.
        5. Then go to File, Project Paths to Open the "Project Paths" Window
        6. Click on the "Browse" button on the right-hand side of the "Model Runs Path" text box to select the folder for the Model Runs Path.
          1. The default folder is "modlruns" under your installation folder, that is, if you install DDMSW 3.5.2 under C:\DDMSW352, then the default model run folder should be C:\DDMSW352\modlruns\. But you can select a different folder on your computer.
      2. If you are going to create a new project, then:
      3. Go to File.
      4. New Project to open the "Select Project - Add" window to set up and save the new project.
      5. Then go to File and select Project Paths as is indicated in the above step to set up the project path.
  5. Importing the Old Projects
    1. If there are any backup files (in zip format) from DDMSW 3.3.2 (see Step 1), you can import them into DDMSW 3.5.2 now.
      1. Go to File.
      2. Project Management to open the "Project Management" window.
      3. Import Project radio button and select "Import" button.
      4. Locate the folder which contains the backup projects you are going to import from.
      5. Highlight the project (in zip file format).
      6. Click on "OK" to import it into DDMSW 3.5.2.
    2. If you have more than one project to import, repeat the previous step to import the others.

Upgrading DDMSW 3.3.2 to DDMSW 3.5.2

Although a full installation of DDMSW 3.5.2 is highly recommended, you can still upgrade DDMSW 3.3.2 to DDMSW 3.5.2. However, your DDMSW 3.3.2 software will be replaced by DDMSW 3.5.2 after the upgrade but the data will be preserved. We highly recommend backing up the project data from DDMSW 3.3.2 before you do the upgrade.

Steps

  1. Right-click on the Installation File (ZIP) and choose "Save Target As" to download the self-extract file FCDMCPATCH352.EXE to the installation folder of DDMSW 3.3.2 (By default, the installation folder of DDMSW 3.3.2 is C:\FCDMC\ST. To make sure this is the right folder, you can check if there is an executable file called "stl.exe" in this folder.)
  2. Double-click on FCDMCPATCH352.EXE to self-extract files in the installation folder of DDMSW 3.3.2. Due to the size of this executable file, it might take a few minutes to extract all the files in the package depending on the processing speed of end user's computer.
  3. An information message box pops up which reads "All items for DDMSW Patch were successfully extracted" once the upgrade process is finished.
  4. When DDMSW 3.5.2 is launched for the first time after the upgrade, users will be prompted if they want to load the new sample projects in. The users can choose to load them, or they can load them later.
